Can Dusty Hay Cause Respiratory Problems in Horses?

Yes. Dusty, mouldy hay is the primary trigger for Equine Asthma Syndrome, which includes severe conditions like Recurrent Airway Obstruction (heaves) and Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD). When horses consume degraded hay, they inhale millions of microscopic mould spores and aerosolized dust particles deep into their lungs. This prolonged exposure triggers severe allergic reactions, chronic inflammation, and restricted breathing, ultimately compromising the horse's health, athletic performance, and quality of life.

The horse hay problem

Horses are obligate nasal breathers, and they spend hours each day with their muzzles in hay. Mould spores, dust particles, and bacterial contamination in stored hay aren't background concerns for horses — they're the inhaled environment. The veterinary literature on equine respiratory disease points consistently in one direction: dust and mould exposure are the dominant drivers.

Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO), commonly known as heaves, is a severe, chronic respiratory condition directly linked to the storage quality of forage. The connection is microscopic: when hay is baled with slightly too much moisture, fungal and mould populations explode in the warm, dark environment inside the bale. These fungi release billions of microscopic spores. Because horses bury their noses in their feed, they inhale these spores deeply into their lower respiratory tract, triggering a massive, chronic allergic response that restricts their airways and permanently damages lung tissue.

Why Soaking Hay is Only a Band-Aid

Many horse owners resort to soaking or steaming their hay before feeding to suppress dust and manage respiratory symptoms. While soaking temporarily weighs down airborne particles and makes the hay safer to eat in the moment, it is a labor-intensive, freezing-weather chore that does not fix the underlying issue. The hay still suffered dry matter loss, protein degradation, and mould proliferation during storage. Preventing mould development at the baler with a biological inoculant is a vastly superior strategy to washing degraded hay in a wheelbarrow months later.

Practical advice for horse hay buyers

If you're a barn manager or boarding facility evaluating HayRite-treated hay from a supplier:

  • Open a bale and inspect the core. Treated hay should be cool, green-toned, and mostly free of visible mould. Some surface dust is normal; pervasive white or grey mould is not.
  • Smell it. Treated hay should smell mildly herbal and slightly sweet. A strong barnyard or musty smell indicates the treatment didn't work or the hay was baled too wet for the rate.
  • Ask your supplier about application protocol. 100 mL/tonne, baler-mounted sprayer, applied at baling. If the supplier can't tell you those details, the treatment may not have been done correctly.

If you grow your own hay
