What is GRAS Status?
GRAS stands for "Generally Recognized as Safe," a designation established by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When a substance holds GRAS status, it means that qualified experts have evaluated the scientific data and concluded that the ingredient is completely safe for its intended use in animal feed. While Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as a species enjoys broad GRAS recognition for many agricultural and feed applications, DB38-specific regulatory documentation is currently moving through standard channels.

Operator handling
Recommended handling practices when applying HayRite:
- Avoid eye contact and inhalation of spray mist. Standard hay-handling eye protection and dust mask are recommended during application.
- Wash hands after handling. Routine hygiene is sufficient.
- No acid-resistant gloves required. Standard work gloves are fine.
- No respirator required under normal application conditions.
- No special ventilation required beyond what's normal for tractor cab and hay-shed work.
The Biological Advantage over Propionic Acid
The difference in operator safety between HayRite and chemical preservatives is stark. Traditional propionic acid requires strict safety protocols, including acid-resistant gloves, chemical goggles, and robust ventilation to protect the operator from corrosive fumes and severe skin burns. Furthermore, acid-based preservatives require specialized corrosion-resistant applicator equipment to avoid destroying your baler. HayRite, as a purely biological inoculant, eliminates these hazards entirely. It requires no specialized personal protective equipment (PPE), emits no toxic fumes, and is completely non-corrosive to your expensive baling machinery.

⚠ Strain Caveat Most published feeding-effect studies use the H57 sister strain (Ngo et al. 2021; Pan et al. 2022). DB38-specific feeding studies are part of our active research program.
